About the artwork

Vincent Van Gogh's favorite subjects were large blossom branches. He borrowed this subject, Almond Blossom, from Japanese Printmaking. He painted the picture as a gift for his brother, Theo, and sister-in-law, Jo, on the occasion of the birth of their son, Vincent Willem. Little Vincent was Van Gogh's nephew and namesake. Vincent Willem went on to found the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam where the original painting remains today.

Almond Blossoms and the Almond Tree symbolically represent the return of spring. The Menorah was shaped in the first of a blossoming almond tree. In some religions the almond tree represents God's watchfulness, whereas in other's it represents resurrection.

To the ancient Greeks, the almond tree and its blossoms were associated with a legend about Demophon and Phyllis. They had arranged to be married, but before the ceremony could take place, Demophon was recalled to Athens for the funeral of his father. He promised to return, but he miscalculated and arrived three months later to find that Phyllis had hanged herself. As is often the case in Greek myths, the gods were so moved by her love, that they transformed her into the almond tree. Demophon sacrificed to the almond tree, and in response, the tree blossomed.
